At Western Springs College all students are encouraged to reach their artistic potential, we aim to 'develop creative, critical and analytical thinkers in the visual arts'.

Year 9
We hope that all students choose to experience the Visual Arts area of the curriculum in their year 9-course selection. We see Art in Year 9 as a confidence building experience that leads on to Art as an option at year 10 level.

Year 10
In Year 10 students can opt for a half or full-year course that aims to develop students' knowledge of artists and media experience to a higher level.

Students will experience a range of art making ideas through both two and three-dimensional media.

We see this course as a solid grounding for our NCEA qualification courses

Year 11
Our year 11 programme motivates students to achieve significantly on a national level.The programme subject matter focuses on 'Our place; Waiorea, Nga Oho and the Waitemata Harbour the history of the land and its people.

Year 12 and 13
In year 12 and 13 Visual Art Students can choose which of the disciplines they wish to work in; Fine Arts, Art Design or Photography. These are assessed as level 2 on the NCEA framework. 2003 was the last year our options Photography, Design, Painting and Art History will be examined as Bursary qualification subjects – from 2004 they are assessed as level 3 NCEA subjects.

Events
Students draw on the experience and cultural diversity of school community and of our top class art staff. Work is exhibited at various events and in the school.
