The 17-year-old former Western Springs College student won the national top-of-subject scholarship award for biology.

"There was no doubt in our minds that she would get a scholarship," former biology teacher Geraldine Victor says.

Sylvie's father is an AUT lecturer in ecology and her mother has a degree in maths and physics.

"I remember hating science in year 11 but I didn't really know what it was all about until later," Sylvie says.

The Sandringham resident also gained scholarships in calculus and physics and received an Auckland University scholarship.

She has started a conjoint degree in biology and engineering and hopes to do volunteer work in Africa.

Sylvie says she chose her degree with volunteering in mind.

"I know it will be something useful and something marketable."

Sylvie was Western Springs College dux in 2005.
