Winter Sports Kick Off at Western Springs College.

At Springs the winter sports season is well underway. The college has entered 33 teams in Auckland’s inter-secondary schools’ competitions. There is a wide range of sports; the main stream winter sports of rugby, rugby league, football (soccer), netball, indoor basketball and hockey all have several teams. The sports program is rounded out with teams entered in the lacrosse, under-water hockey, table tennis and water polo competitions.

With such a wide variety of sports teams there is an opportunity for all college students to find a place in the sport of their choice. It must be noted that girls make about half the number of participants in college teams.

After school each day Te Whakamanu (the college’s sports centre) buzzes with activity as various teams gather for their practices. Wednesday is very busy as this is also the game night for girls’ football, rugby league and boys’ hockey.

This winter season sees the school’s new turf in constant use for practices, and on Tuesday evening serving as the venue for girls’ hockey matches.

The number of teams reflects the schools ongoing commitment to a vibrant and varied school sports program. It is pleasing to note that the students have taken the opportunities the school offers in winter sports with approximately 38% involved in a sport.
