Ruby Esther Takes Out the 2016 Word Up Competition

On the evening of Friday September 9th, Year 13 Western Springs student Ruby Esther took out the Word Up! competition at the Corban Estate. This competition invites all rappers, poets, spoken-word performers and songwriters from 13 to 20 to perform original material in any word-based genre. Ruby took her work through an audition before taking the top prize in the final. Among other things, she gets a professional recording session with David Atai of Nesian Mystik fame.

Ruby’s winning performance was a piece she called ‘I Normally Write Funny Poems’ which still sparked with humour but welded this to a powerful and personal response to the world. The refrain of ‘I was scared’ took in the familiar fears of a seven-year-old before turning to the big issues that confront us today and the helplessness that can elicit, even as an adult. The crowd (and the judges) were impressed. Check it out for yourself.
