Secondary School Swimming

Our 13-15 years boys’ relay team of Sam Kenny, Tobias Beaumont, Jasper Stevenson and Koen Dettling came 6th in the 4x100m freestyle relay and 6th in the 4x50m medley relay.  They also came 4th in the 4x50m freestyle relay behind Auckland Grammar, Westlake Boys High School and Palmerston North Boys High School.  It was a huge achievement particularly since they were unseeded and swimming in the slower of two heats.

Our mixed medley relay team of Tess Whineray, Hereata Crosswell, Sam Kenny and Tobias Beaumont also swam well.  They had to swim in the 16 and over category although only one of the swimmers was 16 and they finished 8th overall.

In the individual events:

Abigail Sharp swam personal bests in the 14 year old girls 50m Breaststroke and 50m Butterfly and 50m Freestyle. She and Tom Kenny both swam personal bests in their 2x50m freestyle relay. Tom Kenny also swam personal bests in the 13 year old boys 50m, 100m and 200m Butterfly.

Koen Dettling swam personal bests in his 15 year old boys 50m Butterfly, Backstroke and Freestyle and Jasper Stevenson swam personal bests in the 14 year old boys 50m Butterfly, 100m Individual Medley, 100m Backstroke, and 100m Freestyle.

Tobias Beaumont swam a personal best in the 50m Freestyle leg of the relay and in the 15 year old boys 200m Breaststroke.  Tobias swam in the 50m Breaststroke final for 15 year old boys and came fifth.

Sam Kenny swam in six age group finals for 15 year old boys, swimming personal bests in all of those races (the 100m Breastroke and 100m Individual Medley, the 200m Individual Medley, 50m Butterfly and 100m Breaststroke) and winning two Bronze Medals for the 100m Butterfly and 200 Breaststroke events.

Tess Whineray also swam in six age group finals for 16 year old girls swimming personal bests in the the 50m, 100m and 200m Freestyle, coming 4th in the 200m Freestyle.  She also came fourth in the 400m Freestyle.  In the 50m Backstroke she won the gold medal for 16 year old girls, and silver for the 100m and 200m Backstroke events.

We were really lucky to have Sandra Burrow coaching the swimmers and it was a great event.
