Principal’s Notes – Nov 2023

One of the themes I return to time and time again with our students and their parents too, is “what are your next steps?” Focus on your exit qualifications and where are they going to take you – the next steps on your educational journey.

Harry Ashton-Ireland (see photo) left us in 2020 to pursue his dream as after many years of hard work he was accepted into two dance academies as a full-time classical ballet major.

Harry’s recollections of his time here at Springs is of inspirational teachers.  Incredible people who motivated him, brought out the best in him and encouraged him to “think outside the square”.  Harry’s Mum notes how lucky he was to have teachers who he could look up to as role models, as well as fostering a love and passion for learning.  Above all else it is testimony to Springs’ inclusiveness and open mindedness that Harry could thrive here.  One day we hope Harry will come back to show us what hard work, dedication and passion can do!

Also on the theme of next steps post school I’m happy to report that the Kennaway Prize winner Abner Duarte (see photo in middle) has graduated with a degree of Master of Earthquake Engineering.  He has been working as well as studying in the field of geotechnical engineering.  He acknowledges both his geography and mathematics teachers for the inspiration to pursue this career which has led him to be the principal geotech designer for the new Parahaki Bridge over the Manawatu River.

Abner has also given back to the community in a tangible way by serving as a reservist engineer in the NZ Army, putting up his hand to help out in the floods and cyclone earlier in the year.

To all alumni reading this – do keep in touch, tell us about your “next steps” post school.

To all of our students, parents and friends of the school – do take a summer break over Christmas and New Year to recharge for the year ahead.  WSCW will be closed down from Tuesday December 19th 2023 to Friday January 19th 2024.

Seasons Greetings,

Ivan Davis
Principal
