Matt Day has been keen on motor racing for as long as he can remember.
It’s a passion which has been passed down to him, starting with his grandfather who raced in the 60’s. Matt’s family has a strong presence in the motor racing world. The whole family volunteers at race days & his mum Deb is the President of Motor Sport NZ.
Matt has grown up at the track watching race cars and at four years old started sitting on his parents’ lap doing circuits at the track. At nine he was driving golf buggies around the farm and SIM racing (virtual motor racing) to hone his skills. At twelve he started all ages motor racing at the track.
Matt does circuit racing in a number of different car models. He won the South Island all ages endurance championship in a
Lamborghini GT3 at the end of last year.
Matt took part in the BMW E46 championship series this summer and placed in top three.
Racing started as a passion project but Matt is intending to pursue a career in motor racing after he leaves school. Matt’s parents have been incredibly supportive and spent many hours at the race track and helping to fund his racing. He is also grateful for the generous support he’s received from sponsors.
Matt would like young people to know that when other people tell them ‘Anything is possible if you put your mind to it’ it can be true. He believes that ‘if you love something enough it doesn’t matter how difficult it is’.
