Figuring out a career path is a journey that starts well before leaving school. It’s…

Hi! We’re the WSCW Drainiacs.
Our drains are very important. They keep our streets dry, clean and flood-free. However, they can also get clogged with leaves, litter, and other debris which can stop them from doing their job properly. Also, the drains around our school are all part of the Meola stormwater catchment, and so anything they collect ends up in the Waitemata Harbour.
That’s why we’re working with the Neighbourhood Support Group Auckland to adapt their Adopt-a-Drain programme for our school. We have adopted 6 drains near our school along Motions Road and Old Mill Road. This means that we (along with any other interested WSCW students) will keep an eye on these drains and keep them clear of any leaves, rubbish, or other debris that could clog them or end up in our harbour.
Meet our drains:

How can you help?:
If you’re a student at WSCW, we’d really appreciate any help. We’re looking for any fellow Year 13s who would be keen to help during their break times, or any other students who are keen to help before or after school. Don’t worry, this isn’t a major commitment! The drains will probably only need to be cleaned once or twice every few weeks. This is also a great opportunity to demonstrate our school values, and it’s an awesome volunteering opportunity. If you’re interested, please DM or email us.
We also ask if students could contact us if they see one of our drains is blocked, or if there is a lot of litter or other debris around them. We can be contacted at @wscw_drainiacs on Instagram, or you can email either of us at vincec@wsc.school.nz or carteri@wsc.school.nz.
For families and other members of the community:
Adopting a drain is an amazing and easy way to make a big difference in your own communities. Help us to make Auckland a cleaner and better place by adopting your own drain!
You can do this by going onto the Adopt-a-Drain website (Adopt A Drain | Neighbourhood Support New Zealand) and signing up.
Naming Contest!
We will also be hosting a naming contest for our six drains. We’re looking for any funny, punny, or just simply cool names. If you have an idea, please tell us through this quick Google Form: Drainiacs Naming Contest Form.
The winners will be announced during Term 3, and the best names will win a prize.
Thank you for helping us make our community a safer and cleaner place!
