Our Students in ‘A Little Mermaid’

Recently eight of our students appeared in the National Youth Theatre’s presentation of Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’. The show took place at the Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre.

Holly Broom, Isla Crowther, Indigo Devereux and Saskia Mok (all Year 10 students), Maya Robbins and Archie Smith (both in Year 9), Olivia Sandbrook (Year 12) and Molly Smith (Year 11) did us proud!

Appearing ‘The Little Mermaid’ was a highlight for these students, who worked hard to prepare for their roles, over a number of months, They loved the experience of performing as part of a big cast, forming bonds with the other performers and meeting new people. Saskia Mok (a dancer) felt it was ‘clear everyone loves what they’re doing’ and she’s made so many new friends.

Performers get an opportunity to sing, dance and act at NYT and these students have appreciated the opportunities NYT give them to perform in different ways. All the students reported feeling sad now the show is over, but happy to have great memories of the experience, and new performances to look forward to.

The advice these young performers would give to others wanting to act, sing or dance is to have confidence in yourself. It’s important to take care of yourself during a show by getting plenty of rest, eating well to avoid burnout.  Archie Smith, who’s appeared in several NYT shows believes it’s good to challenge yourself to play different characters, as he did taking on the role of Prince Eric. Olivia Sandbrook (who played Ursula) agrees. It’s the first time she’s played a villain and she thoroughly enjoyed it!

And of course, the most important thing – make sure you learn your lines and know your moves!
