Congratulations to all of our Springs-Waīorea students/ākonga who participated in the Secondary Schools Winter Tournament Week this year. Below are some of the team reports that we received.
BASKETBALL – U15s Boys
The Western Springs U15s Boys’ basketball team had an impressive run during their recent tournament week. The boys went undefeated in pool play, securing strong victories over St Peter’s College, Rangitoto College, and Tuakau College, earning a spot in the quarter finals.
In the quarter finals, they faced a tough Liston College team – ultimately falling short and moving into the 5th-8th placement bracket. In an exciting match against Howick College, the boys narrowly lost by just 2 points. They closed out their tournament with a hard-fought battle against Mt Roskill Grammar School, who edged them out by 5 points.
Western Springs finished 8th overall, but the boys left the tournament with their heads held high, having enjoyed every moment on and off the court. After their final game, the team celebrated with a meal together, capping off a great tournament experience!
BASKETBALL – U19s Boys
Our U19 Premier Boys basketball team, lead by Coach Woolley Leauanae and team Captain Kupe Kouratoras, competed in the AA Premiership national qualifying tournament organised by Basketball New Zealand, and hosted by local associations, for larger secondary schools around the country.
The team competed in the four day tournament at Bruce Pullman Arena the week of the 4th of September. They played 8 games against St Kentigern College, Sacred Heart College, Waitakere College, Ormiston College, Pukekohe High, Whangārei Boys High and De La Salle College. They trained hard leading up to the tournament and gave their everything out on the court. The competition was tough and a great experience for the team. They placed 20th overall and 5th in their pool – a great achievement against the top schools in their zone. Congratulations!
A huge thank you to our school Sports Coordinators who work tirelessly to make Tournament Week happen for all the teams and organise such a seamless experience. We appreciate your time and all the hard work that goes into making this possible for all our players and teams to participate in the sports they love.
We would also like to acknowledge our Year 13 players who put on their Western Springs College-Nga Puna o Waiōrea basketball uniforms to represent the school on the court for the last time. It has been a pleasure watching them grow and develop their passion for basketball over the years. We would like to thank them for their commitment and dedication to basketball and wish them all well in their future endeavours.
And lastly a massive thank you to Coach Woolley for all his time and commitment to basketball over the season and for leading the team through another successful season.

EQUESTRIAN
Two of our WSC Equestrian Team riders (Lola Brown and Michael McClean) represented WSC in the North Island Secondary Schools Equestrian Championships at the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo during Tournament Week. This year, the event had the biggest number of entries it has ever had (with 426 riders and 508 horses from across the North Island), so the competition was huge for our team.
The team had a fantastic week competing in classes across show-jumping, dressage and eventing, with Lola placing 5th in arena eventing for a superb round across a challenging course, as well as an exciting debut for Michael and her horse Mana in dressage and for Lola and her horse Meeka in the 1-1.05m show-jumping class.
A big thanks to the parent helpers, Tamah and Sal (also on-site team manager and on night watch!), and to team mate Ava who travelled down to support (hope you and Polly will be with us for the next one!) and most importantly, to the wonderful horses – Meeka and Mana.

FOOTBALL – First XI Boys
The 1st XI boys Football team travelled to Whangārei for the Malcolm Cowie Tournament. This team did extremely well during the five day tournament reaching the final, losing to Avondale College on penalties. The team was well coached by two ex-students, Leo Maisey and Shaan Vaidya, who both did a great job on and off the field.
A huge thank you to Sonya Havill and Tony Townley for managing the team, and also Sailesh Vaidya (WSCW Business Manager) for driving the team van & providing support across the week. Finally, farewell to our Year 13 players who were great role models for the younger players playing in their first school tournament.
HOCKEY
The First XI Girls Hockey team participated in their first ever hockey tournament! It was held at the fabulous National Hockey Centre grounds in Albany.
Excitement was high as the girls played their first pool game, which we narrowly lost in the last 2 minutes by 1 goal! As in all tournaments, there were lots of ups and downs but the girls played some of their best hockey and finished in the top half of the tournament with a final game score of 6-0. What a high to end on!

NETBALL Premier Girls – UNISS
This year, our Premier Netball team competed in the annual Upper North Island Secondary Schools (UNISS) Netball tournament held at Te Pai Netball Courts. The girls represented our school with pride and determination, showcasing their growth and teamwork throughout the tournament.
On behalf of the team, I would like to bid farewell to our two Year 13 players, Bella Harcourt and Sienna Lindsay-Bishop. Your experience and maturity were crucial to the team, and we are grateful for the leadership you provided. We wish you all the best for your futures and hope you thrive in your chosen paths.
A special thanks to our parents and supporters who came out to support the team throughout the week.

ADDITIONAL SPORTS RESULTS
ARCHERY – Winter AIM
Winter AIM is the one-day, mid-winter interschool tournament for archery. This year’s tournament was held at Auckland Archery Club (One Tree Hill Domain) in August; with 43 schools and 195 archers participating, the WSC team did fantastically well!
Welcome to Stella Tan and Lottie Wallace who shot for the team for the first time at this event; we now have 5 Barebow, 5 Recurve and 1 compound Archers who have participated this year.
Congratulations to the following students who received medals!
- Jacob Schaffer – Individual Gold in Barebow
- Jacob Schaffer & Toby Schaffer – Gold in Two-Person Barebow
- Frankie-Su Morgan-Ahkit & Elsie Beachman – Silver in Two-Person Barebow
There were also great performances by the others in the team against some tough competition! This was an amazing result all round!

BASKETBALL U17s Girls – Northern Regional Cup
This competition was great development for the team, especially for our up and coming Year 9 players, Hawk Kaulima and Maisie Mackintosh. They had a few challenging games playing against Premier teams, but managed to continue playing with great determination throughout the tournament.
A special thanks to Dallas Pickering (Coach), Keller Young (Assistant Coach) and Kyro Thomas-Meleisea (Manager) for leading this team.
