In a proud and historic moment, Aotearoa New Zealand has reclaimed the Guinness World Record title for the world’s largest haka after approximately 6,531 people (initial count, which could increase) performed Ka Mate (the haka composed by Te Rauparaha, chief of Ngāti Toa Rangatira) on the number 1 field at Eden Park last Sunday (September 29th)!

People travelled from far and wide to support the kaupapa – likely including many of our Springs & Waiōrea whānau who booked their place in history here! A line-up of New Zealand entertainers played before the haka got underway. The haka had to be performed for one minute, so those present performed Ka Mate four times in a row.

Dame Hinewehi Mohi (Ngāti Kahungunu/Ngāi Tūhoe) championed the world record attempt as part of the 20th anniversary of the Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust.

Dame Hinewehi said, “Haka is an important part of our culture and returning the mana of this world record away from the French and back to the land of its origins and ensuring it was performed correctly and with integrity was vital. This momentous event has enabled us to showcase our rich cultural heritage to the world and reinforce the deep connection we all share“.
