WSCW closed for on campus learning for Lily Laita’s funeral.

11/10/2023

Lily is a long serving staff member of Springs/Waiōrea. Her 30 years of service to the school and its students began in 1992 and she is currently the Head of our Art Department, a position she has held since the mid 2000’s.
Her profile within our student body and in the wider art community is massive. Her commitment to the art students at Springs/Waiōrea is perhaps best exemplified by her returning to the school on many days during the current holiday break to help students with the completion of their presentation boards.
Her profile within the arts community is best illustrated by the fact that Te Papa holds 18 of Lily’s works in their collection.
Lily will arrive at school at 10.00 am on Wednesday morning to lie on the marae before being transferred to the whare tāpere for the funeral service which will begin at 11.00 am and conclude by 1.00 pm. Marae tikanga will be managed by our tumaki Pā Chris Selwyn and the Waiōrea team. The formal funeral service will be managed by Tipene Funerals. A packaged hangi prepared by Waiōrea whānau will be shared with guests at the conclusion of the funeral service.
Parents, current students and ex-students as well as members of the community who have had contact with Lily are all invited to attend.
Parents who require supervision of students under 14 years old for the day of the school closure should contact the school office admin@wsc.school.nz. Students will work on-line in a supervised environment.
Work on Google Classroom will be provided for all students remaining home and our senior students will use this as an additional opportunity to prepare for external NCEA examinations.
Any activities in our school calendar planned for Wednesday October 11th will be rescheduled and advance notice given of the new dates.
Once again, can I personally thank the members of our community who have sent such thoughtful messages of condolence at this most challenging of times. They are most appreciated.
Ngā mihi
Ivan Davis
Principal
