A mammoth thank you to the Waiōrea Community Recycling Centre team for hosting Wises Day 2025.
We loved Christine, Esther and Tom’s informative tour of the Op shop and recycling facility. As well as assistance with the day from Grace. Did you know that potato chip packets can be recycled as soft plastic?
Paul, Shannon and Chris from the Urban Ark team led us through an informative and interactive session on predator trapping, bird counting and water quality testing. We did not realise that so many native birds inhabited a small area of native bush by our motorway.
Tineswari, the Mindful Mender, helped us to reconstruct new jewellery pieces from cast-aside remnants. Who was to know we had such creative talent amongst our ākonga.
Professor Melody Smith from the University of Auckland and her academic colleagues visiting from Finland helped us consider the transport challenges facing our youth as they move around Tāmaki Makaurau. On the wish-list is free public transport for under 18’s.
Wises Day provided the opportunity for the fantastic group of rangatahi from Wastewise, Kaitiakitanga, Travelwise, Healthwise, Digiwise and the predator-trapping group to share their enthusiasm and ideas on how to move sustainably forward.
