Supporting your child through senior subject selection can feel like a major milestone, but you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Here is how you can help guide them through their options:
- Explore Options Online: Direct your teen to the WSCW Careers Hub “School Subjects” section. Reviewing the NZ University Subject Guides together will help clarify which Year 13 subjects are required or recommended for specific tertiary programmes.
- Encourage Open Discussions: Talk through their interests at home, connect them with friends or family working in fields they find appealing, and encourage them to reach out to their teachers and senior peers.
- Take a Career Quiz Together: Have your child take the 15–20 minute Bullseye Future Assessment Pathway quiz on Career Central (accessible via the Careers Hub) to spark ideas for potential career paths and focus their subject choices. There is also a great Interests Quiz on Tahatū (new government careers website).
- Value Transferable Skills: Remind them that subjects like drama, business studies, dance, music, or sports build essential lifelong skills like teamwork and communication, which add value regardless of their final career destination.
- Explore Work Experience: For Year 12 and 13 students, look into the Gateway program for practical, real-world work experience, or consider local volunteering to build practical skills.
- Seek Guidance: Balancing enjoyment with future goals is key. If your teen is unsure about their choices, encourage them to consult their Head of House or email the Careers Department at careers@wsc.school.nz for personalised advice.
