Yr 13 Queenstown Trip

Y13 Geography Queenstown 2019 Itinerary

Sunday 9 Jun

Meet at Auckland Domestic Airport at 7.00am (Group check-in takes longer than individual check-in) for Jetstar flight JQ 295 departing 8.30am.
You must have your student ID card or photo ID for check-in.
You are allowed a 20kg check-in bag, but the lighter, the easier it is to carry. Remember when you pack your flight bag not to have liquids over 100ml, knives etc. You will have them confiscated if you do.

Arrive Queenstown airport 10.25am and hire minivans to drive to the Pinewood Lodge Queenstown to settle in. Bedding provided.

2.30pm We will walk to the Gondola and Luge (5 runs) for an afternoon visit, and to view Queenstown from above and identify spatial patterns. Observe and record the concentration of tourist activities in this location…
Students will then have some free time to start collecting data for their research topic (in groups) and buy their own dinner. This can be eaten out or cooked at the backpackers. We will drive to the supermarket so that I can buy breakfast food.
Time to collect primary research data.

10.00pm All students will be at the backpackers in their dorm rooms.

Monday 10 June
Breakfast provided in backpackers.

10.00am leave backpackers for QRC for talk at 10.30 from Ella from Destination Queenstown on the growth of tourism in Queenstown and from Chelsea of QRC on jobs in tourism.
Free time to collect data for Research Internal in groups. Buy own lunch.

1.00pm. Drive to Arrowtown, a dispersed tourist location. There we will visit the Chinese Gold Miners settlement, a popular tourist attraction.

2.00pm Gold panning at Dudley’s Cottage at. Everyone is guaranteed to take home some gold flakes!

Shopping for potluck dinner.

Evening meal: a pot luck dinner at the backpackers with everyone contributing.
10.00pm All students will be at the backpackers in their dorm rooms.

Tuesday 11 June
Breakfast provided in backpackers.
am: Collecting data for Research Internal in groups. Buy own lunch.

10.00am – 1.30pm 2 possibilities depending on the weather.
1 Possible cycle from Hilton to Jacks Point and back to see a scattered/dispersed activity.
2 Visit iflynz for a talk from Matt Wong, the general manager. He is offering a 50% discount to anyone from our group that would be interested in flying. He would also like you to think of questions to ask him that might be helpful for your research. Like, why locate here?

2.30pm: Visit AJHackett Bungy Jump, Kawerau Bridge for a talk and video on the development of the business and the opportunity for a reduced price bungy jump ($175 instead of $205.I will pay a further $25 if anyone is keen to bungy making the price $150) and or Zip Line for any students interested at $30.
We will also map the linear pattern of tourist activities along SH 6…

5.30 pm Evening meal provided at Winnie Bagoes Pizza restaurant.
Possible visit to the Fear Factory?
10.00pm All students will be at the backpackers in their dorm rooms.

Wednesday 12 June
Breakfast provided.
Packing and cleaning of rooms. (Please note that any damage will be paid for by students in that room.) Bags stored in backpackers, leaving about 9.00am.

10.00am- 11.00am: K Jet on Kawerau and Shotover Rivers. K Jet is part of a concentration of tourist activities on the lake edge.
Free time to finish collecting data and buy lunch.

1.00pm meet to collect bags from backpackers, drive to the airport and return vans.
Jetstar JQ 298 departs 3.50 Arrives Auckland 5.40pm where your parents will meet you and take you home.

Notes
Each student is responsible for their own belongings. Household insurance may cover belongings.
School rules apply.
Represent your school well. Listen to instructions. Bring what you need to carry out your research data collection and make notes on the activities you visit.
Bring a frisbee if you want to play frisbee golf.
Look after each other. When collecting data, stay in your groups. Do not let anyone go out on their own.
Respect the accommodation and the environment.
Make your bag as light as possible, but do be prepared for cold and wet weather as well as sunshine.

Kit List
Photo ID card. Small day pack
Warm, waterproof jacket, with hood, gloves and scarf.
Strong, waterproof shoes for outside, another pair for inside. Warm wool socks.
Trousers, t-shirts, warm jumper or fleece.
Towel and toiletries. (togs?? sunglasses??)
All groups need their maps and questionnaires and pens for their research internal. Phones for photos and apps measuring things like noise. (chargers)
Money for lunches, pot luck dinner and optional bungy/zip line, iflynz.
Water bottle, snacks.
