The Western Springs College-Ngā Puna o Waiōrea (WSCW) Rugby team is registered in the 1RB (restricted Under 85kg) School Boys Rugby grade for the 2024 season. It is the first rugby team we have had for quite a few years so pulling a team together had its challenges, but we’ve managed to maintain a squad of around 22 boys and field a full team with substitutions at each of our five games so far this season.

We have had very tough opposition against Auckland Grammar, Kings College, Sacred Heart and Selwyn College and so are still chasing our first win. However, we came close against Selwyn College in an exciting match ending with a final score of 16-7.

We’ve had injuries to a number of key players for our last two games, which has been hard but the rest of the team has fought well with courage and resilience. We have a 3-week rest from games over the upcoming school holidays, which will allow us to recuperate and hopefully get our full starting lineup back on the field for our last four games.

Myself and the other coaches, Richard Brown, Boyd and Tom Cloonan, are extremely proud of the boys for turning up at training and turning up for each other on game day. They should feel very proud of themselves for showing great perseverance and building a platform for future rugby teams at Springs-Waiōrea.
