History in the Making

Our Spoken Word group, Ngā Hine Pūkōrero: Te Rina Wichman-Evans, Arihia Hall, Manaia Tuwhare-Hoani and ex-student Matariki Bennett  are  off to  Las Vegas to compete in ‘Brave New Voices’ an international youth poetry slam festival in July 2019. No team from New Zealand has ever competed at BNV before, in fact this is the first time anyone from Australasia will compete and represent their country at this prestigious event.

Ngā Hine Pūkōrero ‘s work is richly woven with themes of indigenous and gender issues. They use waiata, karakia and te Reo Māori throughout their poetry challenging stereotypes and sharing new perspectives.

For Ngā Hine Pūkōrero, the trip would be their opportunity to connect with youth from all over the world. They would participate in workshops with the world’s most renowned international spoken word educators. The event would not only be life changing for the team but would also give them skills and connections that they could bring back to their own communities. Any support to help get them there would be welcome.
