Welcome to an exciting new school year. 2020 marks an important milestone for Western Springs College – Ngā Puna o Waiōrea, as all the hard work of last year comes to fruition.
Last year we officially adopted a co-governance constitution and held our first elections under this constitution. At the end of this year, there will be another round of mid-term elections because we operate a staggered election cycle to ensure continuity within our board. Consider whether you would like to become a trustee, and most importantly, make sure you vote.
You might have noticed the school officially became a living wage employer last year. We are very proud to have been one of the first schools in New Zealand to do this and we are delighted that the government is now supporting all schools to do the same. You definitely will have noticed the new buildings that our students and teachers moved into toward the end of last year. And we hope that you will be impressed with the completion of this project, with the landscaping, music department moving into the refurbished S-Block, and the old library’s transformation into a cafeteria. We are sure the cafeteria will be particularly appreciated by students.
We hope that you will be able to support our fundraising campaign to put solar panels on the new gym. This will help the school have a lighter environmental footprint and give our students access to innovative technology. Even if you are not able to buy a whole panel, consider clubbing together with others to buy a group panel.
Of course, education is far more than just the buildings. Our dedicated teachers have worked hard to ensure that the new Flexible Learning Spaces deliver effective learning experiences. The focus this year will be on settling into the new facilities and further unlocking the potential of our wonderful new school, as teachers and students discover the opportunities that the new spaces offer. It will continue to be a challenging and energising time for everyone.
Thank you for your support and I look forward to meeting many of you at school events.
