OPEN WEEKS AT WESTERN SPRINGS COLLEGE/NGĀ PUNA O WAIŌREA School Tours will take place with…
Waiōrea’s Amazing Race and Rā Manaakitanga
As part of Ngā Puna o Waiōrea haerenga week in week 7, the Year 9 and 10 students took part in the bi-annual Omanga Miharo- Amazing Race. Working in their whānau classes, with a tuakana alongside, they began at kura with challenges involving tangrams, knucklebones, a Te Ao Māori quiz, Māori tongue twisters and taiaha challenges. Once completed they were able to proceed out the gate. Other challenges included busking at Point Chevalier raising $90.00 for City Mission, creating a waiata about Owairaka, a bat and ball challenge involving speed calculations, a random ceremony involving a member of the public, a Ki-o-Rahi play-off and ending with a historical frozen moment and lunch at Te Tokaroa.
Day Two was Rā Manaakitanga an annual event where our students go into the community to work for the day. Manaakitanga is one of Ngā Puna o Waiōrea values so this is a way to show the students how that works outside the kura. Students went to the Papatūānuku Kokiri marae to work in the gardens and give out fish heads to the community, to Auaunga (Oakley) Creek to mulch and weed, the Fairfood foodbank to sort and box food, Westmere, Rānui, Newton Primaries and Rānui Kindergarten to teach students kapa haka, work in kura gardens and support teachers with end of the year activities and clean ups.
