We are seeking to fill the position of Kai Urungi (Business Operations Manager) at Ngā Puna o Waiōrea (NPoW or Waiōrea). This role centres on leadership and coordination of our business operations at NPoW, with a focus on financial management, system tracking, and event coordination. This will also include an overview of all school finances to ensure an equitable distribution into Waiōrea of all operational & entitlement resourcing into WSC-NPoW.

The Kai Urungi will work with diverse groups of people both within and outside of the kura. A key aspect of the role is strong communication and interpersonal skills, an ability to collaborate and maintain the established effective practice model. The role includes both day-to-day management and a strategic approach to the sustainable operations of the kura.

In the role of Kai Urungi, accountability and reporting are integral to the smooth operation of the position, and the kura. The appointee will report to the Tumuaki, and through him, Te Ohonga Ake, the advisory board for the kura. The Kai Urungi will provide regular updates on ongoing plans and activities, ensuring their continued effectiveness in achieving the kura’s goals.

Some key responsibilities of the role include:

  • Coordinating workflow
  • Developing and maintaining the calendar
  • Working collaboratively with kaiako/kaimahi, whānau and ākonga/tauira
  • Waiōrea Annual Budget coordination, compilation & setting
  • Financial management & monitoring
  • Property management & monitoring
  • Event management
  • Fundraising.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Previous experience in working in the education sector will be advantageous
  • Basic understanding of Tikanga and Te Reo
  • Strong project management skills
  • A range of communication skills
  • Proficiency in team management and event planning
  • Knowledge of financial systems and processes
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders
  • Reporting to the Tumuaki, and subsequently to Te Ohonga Ake
  • Knowledge of Waiōrea culture and values.

Duration and Remuneration

This role is a permanent position. Remuneration will align with the applicant’s qualifications, experience and specialist skills. The appointee will be paid at the appropriate step of the Support Staff in Secondary Schools Collective Agreement – SSSCA). (3.1.3 SSSCA p.11) or link here.

This is a 37.5 hours per week position (technically part-time) across 52 weeks per year. The successful applicant will usually be expected to work onsite and could be expected to attend out-of-school meetings that relate specifically to the role.
