NZ Secondary Schools Rogaine Championships 2018
Western Springs College had a successful trip to Rotorua for the NZSS Rogaine Championships. Rogaining is a form of Orienteering where teams locate as many checkpoints as possible within a set time period. It is a great test of speed, stamina, strategy and orienteering ability.
The Junior Girls Team (Juliet Frater, Andy Heathcote, and Harriet Walker) completed a challenging three hour race in the Whakarewarewa Forest. The girls overcame exhaustion and rugged terrain to finish with a convincing win, well ahead of their nearest rivals Sacred Heart Girls College from Palmerston North, and Taradale College from the Hawkes Bay. Their efforts mean that Western Springs College are the NZ Secondary Schools Junior Girls Rogaine Champions for 2018!
The Senior Mixed Team (Felix Lim, Austin Turnbull, and Sylvie Frater) completed a grueling six hour race, covering nearly 30km to finish a creditable 7th.
The students’ results were particularly impressive as both teams were competing against older students, and this is the first time that Western Springs College has entered this competition.
Particular thanks to Sami Vaauli for her ongoing support and organisation.

Orienteering
Another lovely weekend with the orienteering team – they are a great bunch of kids! The junior girls placed third in the relay, with Juliet 5th and Andy 7th in the sprint, and Sylvie 10th and Anna 11th in the long. Hattie came 2nd in the standard grade. George completed a rugged and challenging championship course without incident. Most importantly, the Springs girls won the “Small School” competition for the best overall performance in a school with fewer than six competitors.
Lacrosse
This season we have come back stronger and better than ever, having only lost two games so far this season by one point each we are in the running to take out our division. The girls have been working hard and developing a strong lacrosse understanding and play. This time around our girls are really making efforts and good connections on the field to work as a team, the newer players stepping up with the guidance and leadership from our long-time lacrosse girls. Defense is looking good as communication from our goalkeepers has been leading our defense to quick turnovers which resulted in a number of passes down the field and a goal at our end. Our attacking side has taken on notes from training and learning from past games to become a solid, spread out and team working offense. Goals often resulting from quick passes to free players in the hole. We are so proud of our girls this season and will be taking on the Auckland Lacrosse Tournament August the 9th this term. #itscominghome

The team consisted of: Tess Whineray, Henry Williams, Nauatea Crosswell and Cole Bradford. It was a very successful meet with all of the swimmers receiving personal best times in at least one of their events.

Well done to all our swimmers and a very big thank you to one of the parents, Sandra Thomas, who helped coordinate and supervise on the day
Mountain Bike Race
At the second Enduro mountain bike race event in Rotorua on Sunday 4th August Jack Naish (WSC y13) came first in the U20 mid-course event, and first overall. The 22km course, through Rotoruas redwood forest, was challenging due to impressive amounts of rain and mud.
